On the map of imaginary geography, Eldorado is known as the coveted city of gold. Is more than richness, it represents a place of possibilities and utopia. In the words of Voltaire, in Candide, this mythical place “was cultivated as much for pleasure as for necessity. On all sides the useful was also the beautiful.” There were seeking not only fortune but also “honors, things and glories of the world,” says Sergio Buarque de Holanda, in Visão do Paraiso.
Eldorado, the unattainable city, is the starting point for Parra’s solo exhibition at Galeria Leme. More than the legend, here inquiring the idealization of the world, the invention of images of happiness and the hidden impossibility in “Sparkles of desire.” The artist, who took part of the group 2000e8, presents a new series of oil paintings, a neon sculpture and an installation in the central part of the gallery. Her works explores the utopia and its relation with need? and desire.
About the artist
Regina Parra (São Paulo, 1981) lives and works in São Paulo.
She took part of the group 2000e8 and this year she was awarded with I Prêmio Ateliê Aberto Videobrasil. She was selected for some major programs for young artists, such as Temporada de Projetos do Paço das Artes, where she presented a solo show in 2009, and Programa de Exposições do Centro Cultural São Paulo – where she will display a new work in video in November 2011.
Held solo exhibitions at Fundação Joaquim Nabuco, Recife(2010) and Project Room Galeria Leme, São Paulo (2009) . Participated in selected group shows such as A Carta da Jamaica, Rio de Janeiro (2010), Feijão com Arroz , Miami, USA (2010), À Sombra do Futuro, São Paulo (2010), Paralela, São Paulo (2010) and 2000e8, São Paulo (2008).
Graduated in Fine Arts at FAAP, Regina is studying a Masters in Visual Arts at Faculdade Santa Marcelina, supervised by Lisette Lagnado. She also Studied in École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts, in Paris, and the School of Visual Arts at Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro.
