Sandra Gamarra Heshiki

Lima, Peru, 1972.
Lives and works in Madrid, Spain.

Sandra Gamarra Heshiki’s work employs the mechanisms of the art world – production processes, exhibition, dissemination, and commercialization – to reflect upon reality. For her, fiction, translation, and selection are essential ingredients of the reality we live in, but on a larger scale, these dissolve into spectacle, becoming imperceptible. Her work satirizes these procedures by making them visible in order to question our involvement in them. Her artwork suggests that one of the ways to respond and confront an overwhelming reality is to use its own mechanisms of “creation,” engaging with values such as novelty, authorship, originality, and uniqueness.

Based on appropriation, her work acts as a mirror that shifts exhibition formats, alters the circulation of images, and subverts the ownership of culture as well as the narrative between art and the viewer. Within this realm of investigation, her Peruvian heritage adds a syncretic layer where pre-Columbian, colonial, and Western cultures converge. In 2002, due to the absence of an institutional presence in the field of contemporary arts, she created LiMac (Lima Contemporary Art Museum), a fictitious museum established through a logo on merchandise items (pencils, erasers, cups, bags).

Lima, Peru, 1972. Lives and works in Madrid, Spain.
