The solo exhibition Evandro Carlos Jardim – selected works presents engravings produced by the artist through over 60 years of career, four sculptures and unpublished works. The show opens on November 27th and closes its visitations on January 22nd, 2022, at Galeria Leme.
Evandro Carlos Jardim was born in the city of São Paulo, in 1935. In 1953, he entered Escola Belas Artes, where he learned the technique of engraving in metal with Francesc Domingo Segura. In 1973, he held his first solo exhibition at MASP, where he presented engravings and three-dimensional objects in bronze, iron, aluminum and wood. Two years later, in 1975, he participated in the 13th São Paulo International Biennial and a year later exhibited at the 38th Venice Biennale. Alongside his artistic career, he developed an intense teaching activity at various institutions, such as Escola Belas Artes, FAAP and ECA-USP, where he supervised more than a dozen doctoral theses.
In his atelier, at Granja Julieta, Evandro builds his sign-figures through drawing, engraving and sculpture. The approach of different visual languages does not follow, at first, a methodical order; nonetheless, it arises from the artist’s own inner needs: like the path of a bird’s flight, which begins in a small sculpture, among trees and clouds of wood, and ends its movement in a drawing, falling or entering a small house. The composition created by these two works represents space in sculpture, and in drawing the plane.
For Jardim, art is an attempt to express the inner world, coming from the limitations of the outer world, through language, “What I portray is the way I feel the city. And I feel it through a language, which I try to cultivate: the visual language”. Thus, in the artist’s view, art is a way of relating to the world around us, in which the encounter with the other is the only way to cultivate the multiple ways of feeling one another.
