Frank Thiel

Kleinmachnow, Germany, 1966.

Lives and work in Berlin, Germany.

Frank Thiel is a renowned photographer, whose work is focused on chronicling Berlin’s architectural evolution, embodying the city’s turbulent history. Thiel’s photography is documentary as he describes a architecture that is transition, either by human or natural form. His central axis is on the “incomplete” choosing to focus on the process rather than the result.

As a photographer, Thiel pursuits to enhance the aesthetics of temporality and change. He has done this by capturing chipping and decaying walls around the city of Berlin in large-scale photographs, but he has also shifted his lens to the giant ice formations in the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares in Argentina. The resulting images are a haunting meditation on the majesty and resilience, as well as the fragility and endangerment of these natural edifices that are far more ancient than any human construction. In its abstract painterly quality, his work also explores the intimate and evolving relationship between painting and photography.
