The exhibition presents a collection of works, mostly from the 1980s, created with materials salvaged from the 1984 Mercado Modelo fire in Salvador, Bahia.\r\n\r\nMario Cravo J\u00fanior, one of the foremost Brazilian artists and a pioneer of Modernism in Bahia, provides us with a peculiar perspective in a unique theme: sculptures of heads \u2013 exclusively. These pieces, patiently acquired by Paulo and Thais Darz\u00e9 over the course of several years, form the basis of this precious collection.\r\n\r\nBy placing Cravo J\u00fanior\u2019s \u201cHeads\u201d series in a temporal context \u2013 thus furnishing the exhibition\u2019s title, \u201cTimeheads\u201d \u2013 we are led to reflect upon the \u201cdevouring\u201d of the old by the new \u2013 a continued process of effacement which is often overlooked. In these pieces, Cravo denounces the effects of time on lands that refuse to acknowledge their past.\r\n\r\nThe iconographic presence of Afro-Brazilian art, common in the artist\u2019s milieu, recurs throughout Cravo J\u00fanior\u2019s oeuvre, consequence of his social life. This is an artist whose \u201cAfrican truth\u201d can take on disconcerting dimensions. These pieces, many of which depict Exus (messenger spirits associated with African and Afro-Latino religions), possess the same disquieting profundity found in African sculpture.\r\n\r\nMario Cravo J\u00fanior can also be considered a catalytic and socializing agent whose body of work deals with issues of identity while formally integrating Brazilian particularities with the universalities championed by the avant-garde movement. These heads embody a rite of passage of sorts, they mark the emancipation of a genuinely Brazilian and Bahian art.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nAbout the artist:<\/strong>\r\n\r\nMario Cravo J\u00fanior. Salvador, BA, Brazil, 1923 \u2013 2018.\r\n\r\nSculptor, engraver, draughtsman and professor, Mario Cravo J\u00fanior studied at Syracuse University, United States.
