Galeria Leme presents in its space the fifth individual exhibition of Peruvian artist Sandra Gamarra. Despite firmly rooted in painting, Sandra Gamarra’s work constantly seems to contradict and subvert what is expected from this two-dimensional medium, which many consider outdated and emptied. For the artist, to exhibit her pieces is just the starting point to give a new meaning to the format in which she works and the space where it is experienced. As an image-maker in a world in which they constantly multiply, Sandra Gamarra recycles and reincorporates them to investigate their origins and speculate upon their possible fate.

For the exhibition “Landscape in quotation marks” the artist revisits the landscape genre, characteristic of painting, through the appropriation of photographs of Peruvian and Brazilian landscapes published in the press and reproductions of works of art from different periods. Through the juxtaposition of several imagistic sources, the artist not only subverts and re-signifies a genre that has fallen into deep obsolescence, but also questions the historical and socio-political role of this type of representation of nature and territory. On the other hand, Gamarra creates an intersection between the way nature is represented from a Western point of view, and another one specific to the pre-Columbian cultures, an ancestral inheritance of her native country, Peru.

Landscape painting has always been more than a way of understanding and recording the specificities of a particular place or a medium through which one tries to reproduce the sublime forces of Nature. Like the map, the representation of the landscape served and still serves to edit and re-frame the real from the perspective of the subjects that elaborates it. In this way, an external human logic is imposed to an objective representation of nature, deforming and domesticating the real according to the beliefs, desires, and intentions of Man. From this perspective, the representation of landscape is never faithful, but a subjective reflection of the individual that shaped it as well as his social context and ideological aspirations.

In this way, the “landscapes” that Sandra Gamarra puts between quotation marks, play with the juxtaposition of different times and notions of history, art history, autobiography and imagination as a means to reconsider a set of socio-political relations that are responsible for the formation of the social body and the physical space that corresponds to it. Also inquiring about how landscape has been instrumentalized and confined to the action of man and the repercussions that this situation causes in our relationship with our surroundings and our ways of thinking and understanding it.


About the artist:

Sandra Gamarra, 1972, Lima, Peru. Lives and works in Madrid, Spain.

Has exhibited individually at institutions such as: Bass Museum of Art, USA; Sala Luis Miró Quesada Garland, Peru; Figueiredo Ferraz Institute, Brazil, among others.
